Camp Turk is a Residential Camp for campers aged 8-16. We are located in the beautiful Adirondack Park reserve in Woodgate, NY (45 minutes north of Utica, NY). We offer 1, 2 or 3 week sessions for both Boys and Girls, in alternate sessions.
Camp Turk is located on the beautiful private Round Lake in Woodgate, New York and is situated on over 1,500 acres of land in the Adirondack Park Preserve. It is open to all children between the ages of 8 to 16 and holds 210 campers per session. Campers are roomed according to age. They have the opportunity to participate in over 32 supervised activities.
Camp Turk is committed to a tradition of giving children the opportunity to establish lifelong friendships, learn new skills, gain an appreciation for the outdoors, achieve independence and be a contributing member of “our” camp community.
The campsite itself is surrounded by vast countryside, made up of attractive woodlots and a collection of lakes. There is an abundance of space for extensive land sports, riding trails and nature hikes, with lots of untouched areas for exploring. Additional acreage provides a wilderness camping area for a natural outdoors experience.
Our great facilities include a traditional style theater, recreation hall, numerous arts and crafts activities, tennis courts, a basketball court plus a complete waterfront for swimming, canoeing, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and water skiing. Rustic but comfortable cabins have both electricity and indoor plumbing facilities and there is a fully equipped infirmary and spacious Dining Hall.
Campers are housed in cabins with twin beds & bunk beds. All cabins are solid wood and stone construction with their own showers & storage space (limited for each camper). If we are filled to capacity, there are anywhere from 25 to 30 camper’s per cabin. Campers’ are bunked by age. On the camp application they may request to room with one friend that is the same age.
Camp Turk staff and counselors have been selected based on their background, experience, training, and interest in children. They have completed a comprehensive one week training session in their activity area as well as in counseling. The health and welfare of the campers is a primary consideration, therefore, issues such as contagious diseases, child abuse, homesickness, and specific safety concerns are a part of the educational program for staff and counselors. Key staff, Area Directors, Hiking & Biking staff and of course our nurses will all be ARC certified in First Aid & CPR.
We search for staff through colleges and educational institutions, as well as local advertisements. Many staff use camp as a beginning step toward a degree in education or child care. Some of our staff have evolved from campers to C.I.T.’s to counselors. All staff have previous childcare experience, their backgrounds are checked through the New York State Criminal Justice Services.
We also employ international counselors through Camp America, Camp Leaders, Camp Counselors USA, and BUNAC. These are organizations dedicated to providing camps with highly qualified staff from countries around the globe. In past seasons, we have had staff from England, Scotland, Holland, Germany, Russia, Poland, Australia, Czech Republic, etc. These staff members provide campers with exposure to a variety of cultures. They provide camp with a fresh and unique perspective about the world around us.
